Create a click-to-chat link or QR code

Make a link that opens a WhatsApp chat with one of your numbers with a message already typed in, and a QR code for the same thing. Put them on your website, in an email signature, on an ad or on a printed flyer. Takes about a minute per link.

Before you start — you need a WhatsApp number connected (see Connect your WhatsApp number) and Link Generator access on that number, or workspace ownership. Ownership covers the per-number permission but not the plan.

Links are saved on the server against the number they belong to, so you can come back and copy one again later.

Steps

In the sidebar, under Automation, click Integrations, then the WhatsApp Business card, then the Link generator tab.

Pick the number the chat should open with

The account picker sits beside the Generate prefilled link heading and each option reads as the number followed by its name. It only appears when you have more than one phone number connected — with one number there is nothing to choose.

The saved list below belongs to the number in that picker. Switch the picker and the whole list is replaced. If a link you made has vanished, you are almost certainly looking at the other number.

Type the message the customer will send

Write into the message box what you want already filled in when the chat opens — the placeholder suggests Hello! I'd like to know more about your services…

The line underneath spells out what you are building: Opening the link starts a chat with +60 12-345 6789, message pre-filled.

The limit is 140 characters, and it is a hard stop. The counter beside the button reads 84 / 140, and at 140 the box simply stops accepting letters. There is no error and nothing is lost — but nothing more is added either, so check the end of your sentence is still there.

The counter and the live sentence both update as you type. **Generate link** stays greyed out until there is a message and a number.

Generate it

Click Generate link. A toast confirms Link generated., the message box clears, and the new link appears at the bottom of Saved links — not the top. The chip beside that heading counts them: 3 links.

Copy what you need

Each saved row carries the QR image, the full link, the message it fills in, and four icon-only buttons on the right:

ButtonWhat it gives you
Copy URLThe link on your clipboard, ready to paste into a page, email or ad
Copy QR imageThe QR picture on your clipboard, ready to paste into a document
Download QRThe QR as a PNG file, named qr- followed by the link’s code
Delete linkRemoves the link — read the next section first

Copy URL and Copy QR image turn into a tick for about two seconds so you know the copy worked.

The QR is drawn on a white plate even in dark mode — many scanners refuse an inverted code.

A deleted link stops working for everyone who already has it. Anything you have printed, posted or emailed with that link or QR code on it is dead — it leads to a not-found error instead of your WhatsApp. There is no undo.

Delete link asks first, with the dialog Delete this link? and the sentence The link will be revoked. Anyone who has it saved will get a not-found error instead of being routed to your WhatsApp. Press Cancel unless that is genuinely what you want. On Delete you get Link deleted.

If a campaign is over and you are not certain where the link ended up, leave it in place — an unused link costs you nothing and breaks nothing.

Where you will see a locked tab

Two different things can lock this tab, and they look different on purpose.

No access at all. The tab is replaced by Link Generator unavailable and You don't have Link Generator access on any WhatsApp account. Ask a workspace owner to grant access or upgrade your plan. That is either the plan or the per-number permission. A workspace owner still sees this if the plan is the problem.

On the plan’s wrong side. An amber panel headed Link Generator is a paid feature sits above a read-only tab: Your current plan doesn't include WhatsApp Link & QR generation. You can view existing links, but upgrade your plan to create or delete them. The message box, Generate link and every Delete link are disabled — but Copy URL, Copy QR image and Download QR all still work, so anything you have already printed or posted keeps working. Link and QR generation is included on Lite, Core and Max, so in practice you will only meet this on an older package.
